The Tarot emerged into my life over twenty years ago and since then I have been intrigued and engaged with study, experience, contemplation, and collaboration with the archetypes depicted in the cards. I see the Tarot as a tool that may be used to tangibly demonstrate and utilize the mysterious phenomenon of synchronicity while illuminating and connecting with narratives, characters, personalities, and/or processes that resonate deeply with our experience. The suits of the Minor Arcana relate very practically to where we may be in physical, psychological, emotional, and creative or spiritual terms, and provide visual information regarding the distinguishing dynamics of those areas. The illustrations of the Major Arcana may provide an insight into the cosmological, bigger picture of our lives and the patterns of existence working through and with us, as well as clarity and skills in identifying ways to interact with, metabolize, and integrate them successfully.
Viewed from a scientific lens, there is evidence that the hemispheres and prefrontal cortex of the brain are responsible for different types of thought, process, and functioning, such as; linear, holistic, rational, emotional, language or image-based, and creative. I believe the use of Tarot, by combining language, concept, and image ignites the ability to bring these different cerebral components online simultaneously, resulting in a more holistic and integrative way of viewing, translating, and acting in the world. By facilitating this type of praxis, the Tarot may stimulate neuroplasticity, and lead the way to an expansive and evolutionary existence.
In consultation, the use of Tarot is fruitful when looking for an increased awareness of our connections to the past, present, and future, the multiple components and paths involved, and the results that may manifest. Such a process often increases self-knowledge and confidence in making decisions and taking action. In therapy, I witness the use of Tarot, along with other interventions, as assisting in what I believe to be the leveraging of an ability to initiate awakening, contemplation, and engagement, which can lead to illumination, enduring changes in brain chemistry, and positive behavioral shifts.
